Review :

Harsh 'n hateful slice of bleak Category 3 nastiness

Although Human Pork Chop was made after the Hong Kong handover and hence is far from the full bore explicit grim-fest that it could have been, its still a pretty rough and despair filled experience and hence somewhat satisfying in an unpleasant kind of way. Some reviews here do overstate its punch a little, but for those in the mood for protracted degradation and utter hopelessness this is worth at least a one time watch. The story tells of a young lady in poverty, who tries to make money through prostitution but in the end unwisely steals from her pimp. Once he and his cronies get hold of her, her fate is sealed and the film homes in on her suffering and eventual sad death. Its far from happy stuff and made all the nastier by the fact that it is based on a true story. Admirably the film doesn't try to paint the unfortunate Grace Li as any kind of a saint or even an especially likable or dynamic person, just a downbeat, broken from the beginning type who its hard to feel much strongly about. Thus when the abuse begins it becomes all the more effectively chilling because of the neutral, manipulation free portrayal of Grace. In terms of the bad stuff that goes down there is next to no gore or nudity, but plenty of teasing, beating, confinement and generalised ill treatment, with a notable but not terribly well executed stomach churner of a scene involving a toilet and a simple but wince making use of a molten drinking straw the ghastly highlights. Mostly the film is more about straightforward, unsensational needless cruelty, the more exploitative or conventionally horror oriented moments are less effective than the cold inhumanity on display. The sadistic villains of the piece are mundane, not very interesting, which works in the films favor, these are routine thugs and so their escalating vile behaviour is unexpected and disturbing. Things aren't all successful in the film though, there is a lack of focus and a meandering pace outside of the torments of Grace and the film could have done with some judicious tightening up. The police investigating events and carrying out interrogations are never interesting, also the backgrounding of Grace is a bit humdrum and the film takes some time to really get in gear. Plus there are some shocks in the last ten minutes or so that jar with the rest of the film, attempting to scare in a more traditional way they are simply out of place. Still, evident problems aside this did the trick as a scummy and mean spirited work for me, uncomfortable and nasty stuff pulled along by a stellar central performance from Emily Kwan as the ill fated Grace. Altogether then, not one of the best Category 3 films, but worth a pop for fans of the genre and anyone interested in the sorts of films to leave you sadly despairing of cruelty of the human race.
